Welcome to Week 5

Dear Curtin families,

Here we are already halfway through term one! It has been a very busy start to the year at Curtin and the students have had so many opportunities to participate in some amazing learning and exciting experiences already. Aspirational interviews are now complete for most families and it is fantastic to see so many parents and carers connecting with their child’s teacher to set goals and discuss student learning. If you have not yet had the opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher, please contact them to arrange a suitable time.

Last week we enjoyed a visit from former Olympian, Judo competitor and author Matthew D’Aquino. Students gained insight into what it takes to be an athlete at an Olympic level and learned more about Judo and striving to achieve your goals. On Friday, our school swimming carnival was held and everyone had an enjoyable day. Thank you to Mrs Beresford, staff, parents and other volunteers who contributed to a successful event. Congratulations to the winning sports house, Ainslie and to all of our students for their enthusiasm and participation.

The swimming carnival was the first time many of our Year 6 students had the opportunity to demonstrate their leadership skills as Sports House Captains. They supported younger students throughout the day, organised songs and chants, encouraged teammates and coordinated activities and relay teams. Developing leadership capabilities in our senior students is something that continues throughout the year.

We look forward to seeing more of our aspiring leaders this Friday as Year 6 host our first whole school assembly for the term. Assembly starts at 2:00pm in the school hall and as always, parents and carers are welcome to attend.

We have continued to work on our school plan priorities of number, writing and increasing student wellbeing through developing dispositions for learning and improving creative thinking. To support our focus, students have begun wellbeing lessons this week with a focus on self- awareness. Each class worked on a range of different ideas, including identifying different emotions, how to identify and control angry feelings, exploring our values and self-esteem, mindfulness activities and diversity. The wellbeing lessons are underpinned by the Friendly Schools Plus resource and complement our school behaviour management processes and PBL (Positive Behaviours for Learning).

Students are invited to participate in a Curtin Primary School writing competition that will be open for the remainder of the term. The aim of the new competition is to increase student engagement in creative writing and to promote enjoyment and love of the writing process. To enter, students need to write an original piece of no more than 300 words. Creative pieces are to be independently written at home and can be submitted either on paper or electronically to kate.north@ed.act.edu.au by Monday 23 March (week 8). Stories will then be shortlisted by staff and voted on by students from kindergarten to year 6 during week 9. A winner from K-2, 3-4 and 5-6 will be announced and prizes awarded in week 10. We look forward to seeing what our students produce. Happy writing!

A reminder that next Monday is a public holiday for Canberra Day. I wish all families a safe and relaxing long weekend.

Regards,

Clare Farr
