Mathematics & Numeracy
The Australian Curriculum: Mathematics guides teachers at Curtin Primary. It aims to ensure that students:
- are confident, creative users and communicators of mathematics, able to investigate, represent and interpret situations in their personal and work lives and as active citizens
- develop an increasingly sophisticated understanding of mathematical concepts and fluency with processes, and are able to pose and solve problems and reason in Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability
- recognise connections between the areas of mathematics and other disciplines and appreciate mathematics as an accessible and enjoyable discipline to study.
Teachers use Stepping Stones as a school-wide approach to Mathematics. Combining online, big book and journaling components Stepping Stones enables teachers to differentiate the Australian Curriculum to meet students' point of need. Students are extended with digital learning objects, problem solving tasks and independent challenges.
Students in Years K-2 are also supported by the Count Me in Too program. Students in Years 3-6 are engaged through Middle Years Mental Computation sessions. This program supports students in learning mental computation strategies for addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, decimals and percentages.
